Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of questions that we are frequently asked by learners.

In many instances it is better to go back to the centre where you studied and ask their advice first.

  • What does the level and size of a qualification mean?

All qualifications in the QCF follow the same convention.

The title of a qualification indicates its difficulty, how long it will take the average learner to complete, and its general content, using the following information:

    • Qualification level (from lowest, entry level to level 8 at the top)
    • Qualification size (award/certificate/diploma)
    • Content of the qualification

Simply by looking at the title of a qualification you will be able to see how difficult it is, how long it will take the average learner to complete, and its general content.

For example, you may achieve the NOCN Level 2 Award in Making in it Fashion

To understand the level of difficulty of the units and qualifications in the new framework it might be helpful to know that GCSEs (grade A*–C) are level 2, GCE A levels are level 3 and a PhD is a level 8. Knowing this can help to position the difficulty and challenge of each level in the framework.

  • Will I have to take an exam?

Your tutor will tell you more about how your learning is to be assessed. On most courses, the tutor or trainer assesses your work as you go along and this does not involve exams. For example, the course work you produce, such as computer printouts, paintings or projects, will show you and your tutor what you have learnt.

There are a very few exeptions to this rule.

  • What can I use my certificate for?

NOCN qualifications are nationally recognised and accepted as means of entry into employment, further learning with further and/or higher education.

Access to HE Diplomas are recognised by universities.

  • What happens if I move part way through my course?

NOCN credits are nationally recognised as part of national qualifications.

This means that if you move to another part of the country your credits are banked and move with you and you can achieve more credits at your new location with a new centre building towards a qualification..

This is one reason it is very important to make sure your Unique Learner Number is recorded against your achievement.

  • I've lost my certificate, how do I get a replacement?

You have to contact the centre where you studied, and ask them to submit a Replacement Certificate Request form to us.

Tell them we can supply a form to them if they do not have one.

    A charge may be involved.
