Qualifications and Accreditation

Since 1983, Open College Networks have been leading the way in credit-based learning qualifications that provide flexibility and simplicity to measure and award learners for bite-sized progression in their learning. Using credit-based learning as the foundation, OCN Eastern Region provides expertise in two key areas:

National Qualifications
We offer an ever expanding range of national qualifications to meet the UK’s growing needs. These range from entry level progression courses, skills for life and training for businesses through to leisure courses and vocationally related subjects of many types.

Accreditation of in-house courses
Whether you are a learning provider or an employer or community organisation, OCN Eastern Region can work with you to develop and accredit courses and qualifications specific to your needs. Courses can be built from a choice of thousands of ready made units or created from scratch.

Qualification reform – the emerging national framework

To date, the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) sets out the levels against which a qualification can be recognised but there are no agreed criteria for the titling or size of qualifications.

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a new way of recognising skills and qualifications. It does this by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning) to enable learners to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes. It will also provide a simple and standardised framework that will enable learners and employers to quickly understand the difficulty (level) and size (number of credits) of any qualifications or units achieved.

Credits towards various qualifications can be attained by giving evidence of skills and experience, either from what’s been learnt in life or at work.
