Access Moderators

Ensuring quality standards are maintained and are consistent within and across Access Providers both regionally and nationally is fundamental. Three inter-related areas of activity underpin the achievement of this quality and consistency:  Internal moderation, External moderation, Standardisation.

Internal Verification

All Access to HE providers are required to operate and maintain robust internal moderation processes that are documented and conform to common benchmarks. Internal moderation arrangements are approved at the programme recognition stage and documented in the relevant section of the submission document. The robustness of the agreed arrangements, and the validity of associated assessment judgments, will be monitored by an Access Centre Moderator.

Access Centre Moderation

A Centre Moderator is appointed for each Access provider to oversee the internal processes. A Subject Moderator is also appointed to support the the Access Moderators by focussing on the quality and standards of assessment at subject level.

The Moderator's role is crucial in:

  • ensuring OCN Eastern Region meets its responsibilities as an Access Validating Agency (AVA) for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) recognised Access to HE Diploma
  • maintaining the credibility of local Access to HE provision through ensuring consistency in the award of both credit and the QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma
  • maintaining the quality and consistency of local Access to HE provision
